Lets Talk Tallow

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Tallow?

Beef tallow is the purified, rendered fat that comes from cattle suet. It’s the fat that surrounds the animal's organs. Tallow isn’t the same kind of fat you get in the bottom of your pan after cooking your favorite cut of beef. Tallow is a harder, more crumbly fat and is nutrient dense with one of nature’s highest sources of CLA (conjugated linoleic acid).

How is it processed?

Tallow is harvested after the bovine has been butchered for its meat. Collecting all the suet in to a pot with a little bit of water and set to boil until it liquifies. After which it is pressed through a fine flitter to remove any imperfections like meat chucks. Then it is stored in a container for the cool down phase which turns it back to a solid. These steps are repeated to lessen and rid the fat of that beef smell. Once the product meets our quality we store it in cool dry storage for later use.

What are the uses?

Since tallow is a nutrient dense saturated fat it has many uses. From cooking to candlemakers. The use of tallow has been passed down by our primal ancestors for centuries. The versatile uses of tallow reap big benefits with the ability to go from cooking, beauty and skin care products, to maintaining your wood and leather goods.
The content of tallow is packed with vitamins A,D,E, and K as well as omega 3 & 6 fatty acids. Which makes tallow a great source for these essential vitamins. Furthermore, it has anti inflammatory, anti fungal, and antibacterial properties.
Up the heat! Tallow has a high smoke point! Meaning frying just got better for your home cooked meals. Making tallow a far better option than vegetable oil with added vitamins and minerals with far better flavor.

Okay so why beauty products?

Tallow hydrates the skin better than any other ingredient out there. Due to the chemical composition of tallow it is the most compatible to our skin for absorption. Making it suitable for all skin types. As mentioned above the anti inflammatory, ani fungal, and anti bacterial properties truly sets it apart from other products. Meaning that whether you suffer from eczema, psoriasis, rosacea or itchy skin it works! Tallow is  0 on the comedogenic scale. A fancy way of saying it doesn’t clog your pores. Truly working for all skin types; oily, dry, or combination.
Your body just found its perfect match! I won’t get too technical with you here but the properties of tallow match our skin to the point where absorption is natural and light. For instance, comparing the fad of coconut oil being the holy grail of moisturizer. Ever tried it for yourself? I’m willing to bet you felt shiny and oilier than the pizza you just ordered from Pizza Hut.
That’s because coconut oil is 90% saturated fat. While our sebum (human skin oil) is only 55%! With all that leftover oil just sitting on top of your skin, say hello to clogged pores and acne. Now looking at tallow I’ll give you one guess on the percentage of saturation. Yup! That’s right it matches ours perfectly 55%! Meaning it has the ability to go deep with in the layers of the skin instead of surface level. Letting your natural skin absorb and maintain balance.

On a vitamin level:

Vitamin A: speeds up the wound-healing process (think fast repair of cuts and blemishes) and  is involved in the production of fresh new cells. It can help with the appearance of wrinkles and saggy skin (just to name a few).
Vitamin D: Having strong anti-inflammatory properties it helps improve cell turnover and can prevent the skin from aging damage (again just to name a few).
Vitamin E: Being a very important fat-soluble antioxidant it helps protect the skin from UV damage and soothes irritated skin.
CLA:  The star of the show!
(conjugated linoleic acid)
CLA has the potential to promote cell turnover and regeneration. It also provides moisture and plumpness to your skin and protects it against harmful UV rays.
When we don't have enough of it, our skin will not stay hydrated no matter how much water we drink or lotion we apply.
The skin barrier is one of the key factors that protects your skin from external damage and keeps it naturally healthy. Linoleic acid catalyzes the production of skin-similar lipids and as a result, strengthens cell membranes to keep your skin barrier strong.
Being a prime protector of the skin barrier, linoleic acid also defends your skin against damage caused by UV rays and environmental pollutants. Consequently, it can prevent premature aging caused by exposure to sunlight.
